The Flemish writer and theater maker Rashif El Kaoui calls himself a bastard, a half-breed, a garbage can breed. Rashif grows up with his Flemish mother, his Moroccan father has long been out of sight. Although Rashif bears his father’s last name, he knows little about his roots. In Flanders he fights against all prejudices, also within his family. He travels from his flat gray Flemish motherland to Morocco and his father’s grave in southern France. Looking for answers about his bi-cultural identity. This journey is documented in the documentary “I am a bastard” which has been nominated for a Golden Kalf, a prestigious Dutch cinema prize.
