Biografie Joost van Bellen

Never positioning himself on the foreground of things, DJ Joost van Bellen is a craftsman and an artist whose passion for playing music emerged back in 1985. In the ensuing years he has become one of the most respected and revered figures of the Dutch dance scene with a resume that reads like an encyclopaedia and with a musical spectrum that goes from underground to Acid House, from House to Ambient House, from New York Garage to Speedgarage and now the cutting edge of the newest wave of Electronic music.

Joost van Bellen is one of the first DJ’s who introduced house music in the Netherlands at the RoXY in 1987. He was initiator of the famous Amsterdam Loveball, a yearly held charity event for the Dutch Aids Fund featuring artists, DJ’s and fashion designers from all over the world. In that same period (1991-1995) he was the artistic director at the legendary club RoXY in Amsterdam.

Joost van Bellen created his own series of dance-parties from 1997. To name a few: ‘Speedfreax’ (introduced Speedgarage & 2 step in the Netherlands), ‘RAUW’ (inspired by Culture Club in Gent, Pulp in Paris, Trash in London). He’s one of the initiators and musical director of the Matthaus Passion – The Next Generation Remix (J.S.Bach). Also he’s promoter and resident of the filthiest globetrotting event ‘Club Filth’, which takes him to the major cities of the world As the artistic leader of a few of the most innovative Dutch dance-happenings of the last few years (Manifesto, Fucque Les Balles) Van Bellen does not forget where he comes from.

Nowadays the sound of Joost van Bellen is raw, uncooked, wild and trashy, the DJ’s mixing up just about everything, from Belgian New Beat, Acid House, Dirtydisco, Rock and Oldskool Hip hop to the latest underground tunes from Disco punk, Rock house, Eletroclash to Electrofunk. Guest-DJ’s included Erol Alkan, The Glimmertwins and Felix the Housecat.

Together with Richard Cameron, Joost van Bellen forms the production duo ‘Cowgum’. They are manufacturing hit records such as ‘Filthy and Raw’ which became the biggest hit on the 2005 Miami Winter Music Conference.
